A playful approach in creating a whole fantastic universe with my font called "CHERU“. Accompanying the release of the font, the book is "The alphabet according to a font called CHERU".

Form follows coincidence.

While creating his „Universe called Cheru“ Athens-based graphic designer Christoph Alexander Gratzer (AKA Exidas) followed this method to a T and out came a 186 pages strong book full of holy quotes and mesmerizing graphic experiments.

Over the period of 2 years he designed this book in many steps of artistic deconstruction and reconstruction to find the right flow for its story to tell, becoming very personal but also political in the process.‍

Ode to a font

‍By playing vividly with the roughness of the font itself — a dedication to the legacy of the signpainters of Africa — and filling „CHERU’s alphabet“ with quotes mostly connected to the Hip Hop and Dub cultures, he is so deeply rooted in, shows its immediate connection to street art. Find inspiration in this 186 pages strong book full of holy quotes and mesmerizing graphic experiments.

The font itself was meant to be a caps only rough and rugged experience for the typophil. The first installment of this display font comes in three different weigths. A regular cut with a bit of a belly, a thin cut & a big bad bold cut. Rough elegance we say.
